Fourty years of activity at the frontier of material research and development makes CSM a reliable partner for the aerospace and defence industry.

In fact CSM is able to bring to bear a unique capability for integrating the knowledge about technologies to offer original solutions for the development of frames, engine components, protective coatings and shields by taking advantage of a consolidated multi-scale approach that have been proved essential in the pursuing of the most successful endeavours that have qualified the excellence of the Company. Today the CSM Aerospace and Defence Sector can provide shareholders and customers with a wide amount of capabilities and expertises on materials (light alloys, composites, high temperature materials, etc.), coatings, manufacturing processes and product simulation.

 

All that makes CSM a complete and “unique atelier” able to support aerospace and defence customers in turning new concepts into real functional prototypes within applications spanning from light structural solutions for frames to new conceived materials for engine components and innovative multi-functional coatings. Though a new-comer amongst the company technological and business areas, it has already shown a huge and remarkable growth within the latest five years, having presently reached almost the 11% of the company annual turn-over with about a 2% growth-rate per year.

 

That is mostly due to CMS researchers' skill and to a company organisation thought to mix together the philosophy of a research centre and the rythm and objectives of a private company.From an historical point of view the first seed of the present CSM as a technological player in the aerospace and defence environment is to be found in its mastering of the foundry technologies.Indeed, it was our company to have transferred the "Single Crystal and Directional Solidification technology" for turbine blades to Italy and this event, happened about twenty years ago, has allowed CSM to progressively become an appreciated technology supplier by some of the world most prominent aircraft engine manufacturers.Nowadays, "Aerospace and Defence" at Centro Sviluppo Materiali S.p.A. can count on the most modern pilot scale foundry in Europe and a whole line for the development of near-net-shape components.The former system, endowed with Vacuum Induction Melting (VIM), Vacuum Arc Remelting (VAR) and Pressure Electro Slag Remelting (PESR) capabilities, can manufacture all kinds of special steels, superalloys, light alloys and intermetallic ingots at ultra-high purity standards. The latter system consists of a line specialised in the designing and fabrication of wax and epoxy resins component models, ceramics moulds and near-net-shape components.

This CSM rapid prototyping modelling capability, enpowered with a laser sintering unit for rapid tooling technology development, both supports the needs of the foundry and offers advanced prototyping services to customers. Aerospace and Defence clients can also find in CSM a stimulating technological partner where skills and equipments create the good condition for the development of powder technologies applications.

 

The possibility of the pilot plant to switch between nitrogen and argon, allows CSM powder technologies to give clients the opportunity to develop and fabricate all sorts of powder metallic alloys.In this way CSM directs its efforts both towards the powder market as a supplier of specialised niche products and to research goals aimed at developing new sintered, cold and hot isostatic pressed or hardfacing and anti-corrosion coated solutions. In this case, by matching the powder metallurgy expertise with a deep tribological culture, CSM has succeeded in becoming a reference center for what concerns components reliability and exercise life improvements.

 

That is possible at CSM due to its wide set of tecnologies (i.e.,Hot Pressing, Hot Isostatic Pressing, Plasma Spray, HVOF, PVD and CVD) which allows the design of surfaces characterized by peculiar operational properties.
 

Today CSM is also active in the ceramics and ceramic composites applications development. This empowers the CSM technological offer to cover sectors in the Aerospace and Defence industry interested in developing new ceramics ballistic protections for tanks, ships, aircraft and helycopters, thermal barriers or thermal shock coatings for new generation space reusable launchers, turbine blades and ceramics for electronic applications.

In terms of surface modifications the Centro Sviluppo Materiali has also gained a well-known position in the development of organic and inorganic coatings and panels, with special electromagnetic behaviour or less toxic than hexavalent chromium- and cadmium-based ones. The CSM technological offer is completed by its capabilities and expertises on structural light alloys, polimeric composites, metallic composites, hybrid composites , intermetallics, superalloys  and nanomaterials.

 

These include such forming technologies as Superplastic forming, Hydroforming, VRTM, hot and cold dying, Hot and cold rolling, and a deep knowledge on welding (i.e., Laser Beam and Friction Stirr Welding) and adhesive technologies. The integrated offer in the Aerospace and Defence sector is furtherly enriched by mechanical testing, corrosion and chemical and microstructural analysis services, and by computational and modelling capabilities, embracing several aspects related to the development of aerospace and defence products (i.e., static and dynamic design, crash simulation etc.).

 

Thus, even if Centro Sviluppo Materiali S.p.A. only recently entered the challenging world of Aerospace and Defence, its deep and well-known knowledge on materials coupled with its industrial approach to research has made it a reliable and recognised partner for a technological future together.>
